Confessions from the Court: "Would Jesus Wear a Jersey?"

Would Jesus have played the game of basketball? And if so, how would he have played the game? Check out this video blog and then let me know what you think.

  1. i believe Jesus would definitely be displaying the fruit of the Spirit while playing ball including patience and self-control, He would make his teammates better and know when to shoot and motivate the guys on his team, i can picture the opposition trying to rattle him and get in His head yet He wouldn't be deterred. Jesus said "wisdom is justified by her actions" so He would let his play do all the talking and still love on the other team maybe even give them a rebuke if they needed it.

  2. I think he would have done what ever would glorify His Heavenly Father. In short i guess. I do not do this all the time. And no I am not sure He would play unless His Father told Him and there was a specific purpose, that is my one and only thought about really Jesus playing any sport.

  3. I think we have this mindset that Jesus never played around or joked around with the 12. I think Jesus laughed (shocker!). I think he farted, laughed, and joked around with disciples. It didn't make Him any less of being God, but He was a man. So when the question of would Jesus play basketball I would say yes. Why? Because He loved His sheep. He loved them, and still does, that He would play with them. I think that Jesus would make us feel like we were the greatest basketball players in the world. He would play the game perfect as a team player. He would probably be the best assists player in the game.

  4. He would have played chess. That's much more contemplative... :)

In some ways the idea of Jesus doing a sport like basketball is not really appropriate. God gives everyone skills and talents to be expressed as He desires. So would Jesus have been a great artist? What type of piano player would He have been? What type of mathematician would he have been?

We won't know because that is not what he was called to do.

However, for those who are called to these various professions or skills, we are given direction on how we are to live our lives. For instance, I know what I need to do as a Quality Assurance Manager. It is certainly different than someone who is called to be a writer.

Still, when I play basketball, I have a purpose: to enjoy the game and get exercise. Others come for different purposes (e.g., to improve their game; to win; to not be embarrassed by their opponent). I believe that God is pleased with these purposes as long as they fit into His will for our lives.

As for Jesus, I think He was quite willing to accept quirks (Peter burping at dinner) and mistakes (John tripping over a stick). If He played basketball He would not get bent out of shape when someone blew their coverage or failed to get a pass off cleanly. But He would have troubles when attitudes would get out of hand and not be handled in a Godly way.
